Child Find

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires all states to have a "comprehensive Child Find system" to assure that all children who are in need of early intervention or special education services are located, identified, and referred.

Child Find is a continuous process of public awareness activities, screening and evaluation designed to locate, identify, and refer as early as possible all young children with disabilities and their families who are in need of Early Intervention Program or Preschool Special Education services of the IDEA.

To participate in an Early Intervention Program or Special Education, a child must meet eligibility guidelines according to the IDEA.

Maryville City Schools' Policy
The Maryville City School system offers a free appropriate public education (FAPE) to all students with disabilities within the jurisdiction of the city of Maryville including children who are homeless.  On an annual basis, MCS contacts private schools, distributes flyers, sponsors radio and television spots, contacts local pediatricians, participates in a parenting fair, and engages in other child find activities.  It is our goal to locate and identify and serve every child aged 3-21 with a disability whose needs cannot be met through the general education program.  If you are aware of a child with a disability and would like further information regarding options for evaluation and services, please contact the school system by calling 865-982-7121, or  by emailing Dr. Sandra Earnest, coordinator of special education services.
