PROJECT DESIGN NOTES

1) Research is the foundation of your project.
     Presenting it effectively is essential.

*We judge things first by how they look, then their content. Examine ads, road signs, etc.

*An outline and story board are critical first steps for demonstrating your research.

--What information does another person need to know about your project? List in
           outline form.
--Do a thumbnail sketch (layout) so that you can determine the size, placement, and
proportion of items you need to include.
--If items are too small, the display appears unplanned.
--Leaving a uniform, empty space around an item creates a border.
--Where will you be displaying model(s), equipment, printed materials?

2) Other design elements to consider:

*Is your display sturdy enough to endure people touching it and moving it around?

*Is your display simple and neat in appearance? Clutter detracts from the message or
information you are trying to communicate.

*What is the overall theme of your display/brochure/message? Use it throughout your project.

*How have you made your display/brochure interesting and attractive?

--Composition (relationship of objects, choice of content, etc.)
--Use of color, texture, and shapes
--Border design and parts outside the border
--Lettering (handmade, pre-made, mechanical, computer generated)
         --Organization and mounting of information
--Use of space around the display
--Create depth by using stick pins, shadowing effects, hanging items, pockets, etc.

3) Lettering:

*Optical spacing is better than mechanical spacing.

*Use capital letters for short captions or titles. Use lower case for long titles or captions.

*Emphasize a word by increasing its size and/or color.

*Do not mix styles of lettering.

*Overlap contrasting colored letters for a 3D effect.

*Do use different colors in the same word.
