Step 4.  Formulating a tentative thesis



Formulate a tentative thesis based on the ideas covered in the tentative outline.  This thesis, like the tentative outline, may need to change as the research proceeds; however, you need a controlling idea in order to research profitably.  The thesis must be written in a complete sentence and may not be a compound sentence.  The thesis statement should include the title and author of the works being discussed, the three main points of the paper, and a position or stance.

Example:

Thesis:  Flannery O'Conner's use of imagery, symbolism, and regionalism in her short novels Wise Blood and The Violent Bear It Away conveys her religious beliefs about the South.
